3 Common Mistakes Poker Beginners Make

Playing only stronger hands and swiftly folding weaker ones. Not knowing the art of Bluffing. Continue playing low hands against a raise. I’m sure poker players out there can resonate with me on this.

Few of these early poker-playing mistakes are still visible in my gameplay. However, playing thousands of poker hands taught me a lot.

This blogpost is intended to help the new players to refrain from making the mistakes I made as they get started playing with the poker game.

1.) Starting Hand Selection

A common mistake that beginners make is playing too many hands instead of being selective enough with their starting hands.

You should understand that not every or any hand can win. Although there is no denying that some hands are more likely to win than others and will help you win big, while others will help you lose.

So the takeaway is that you should choose to play the good hands over the bad ones. Following are some of the top 5 starting hands for the new players to the poker game to stick to:

  • AA

  • KK

  • QQ

  • AK (suited)

  • JJ

2.) Think about your opponent’s cards

Cards dealt to you:

Community cards:

After the flop round, you decide to bet more chips in the pot. And, why shouldn’t you? The hand looks promising.

Your opponent puts in a bet, too.

Fourth card:

So the turn gave you a pair, something you weren’t looking for. Still you went ahead and placed a bet. Your opponent did the same.

Fifth card:

It’s a Straight.

You got the card you needed. Brilliant. Time to go ahead and bet. Chances are your opponent will call, even if they suspect they’re beaten.

But, wait a minute, your opponent wins.

Opponent’s cards: (Straight Flush)

You were so consumed playing your own cards that you completely ignore to notice your opponent’s play. All beginners need to learn this poker strategy of being able to work out why your opponent is playing in a certain way.

3.) Bluffing Too Much

Bluffing is all about reading your opponent’s hand and disguising your own. Beginners think that poker is all about bluffing and fall into the trap of doing it far too much. Online poker players tend to bluff even more than live casino players.

For a bluff to work, your opponents need to think you have a strong poker hand. If you are always bluffing, you will become all too predictable.

I have shared my early poker-playing sins with you. What were yours? Let me know in the comments.

How & When BlackJack Started

As with many other games, no one knows exactly the origin of Blackjack. Most agree it was introduced in French casinos in around 1700, where it was known as “Vingt-et-Un”, which is french for Twenty-one.

Most believe that BlackJack is a variation of Baccarat, as the object of the game is somewhat similar, which is to add up the cards in your hand.

Another of its version called “Trente-un”, meaning Thirty-one was prevalent in Spain. The basic rule of the game was to reach a total of 31 with a minimum of three cards.

One of the popular theories states that the BlackJack was invented by the Romans. They would play this game with wooden blocks with numbers scribbled on them. All historians agree that the Romans loved gambling but that doesn’t confirm the theory in any way.

Among the various versions of the game, popularity of Vingt-et-Un’ or ‘21’  continued to grow. It gradually began popping up in North America thanks to French colonists and soon after it was widely played throughout the continent. The rules of Blackjack were quite different back then. For instance, only the dealer was allowed to double down. Also, a betting round was there after every single card that was dealt.

The state of Nevada decided to be the first one to legalize gambling in 1931. However, the popularity of the game among the North American gamblers was not great as they found the game to be dull and didn’t think the payouts were worthwhile.

So, to draw more players to the game, Nevada casinos began offering a special bet. This bet offered a 10 to 1 payout for any player that achieved a 21-point hand made up of a Black Jack and the Ace of Spades. Although the 10 to 1 payout is no longer given (many blackjack casinos today pay 3:2), the name blackjack or ‘black jack’ remained, as the game is known today.

The game of Blackjack continues to spread and grow even today. Thanks to the Internet that has led to online casino industry which has completely revolutionized the game by giving numerous versions. Plenty of famous blackjack books and blackjack movies exist today. But despite the changes, the game is as admired as it was ages ago, giving it an undying appeal.
